There are 4 counters at the airport open 24/7.

Banks are safe for changing money Sri Lanka and give a decent exchange rate. Banks also cash travellers cheques at a slightly better rate than cash, but it takes longer time because they have to call their head office in Colombo to verify your cheques are genuine.

Authorized money changers are just as safe and usually giver a slightly better rate.  Changing larger notes often gives you a better rate than changing smaller notes.

Sri Lankan Rupees is the local currency, which can only be exchanged in Sri Lanka. You would be best to bring Euros, US Dollars or British Pounds and change them at the bank booths at the airport arrivals hall. Credit cards are accepted in most shopping outlets, and ATM machines are widely available in major cities. Beware credit-card frauds whenever you pay direct.
