Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya ancient rock temple just inland from Galle and approx 4 km from Unawatuna (Turn off at Eramudugaha junction) well worth the short journey to get there. The monks are welcoming and the temple is amazing and very unique. there is a giant Buddha and a pagoda up 30 plus flight of steep stairs to reach the Buddha, but the real attractions here are the stone temple and bho tree.
The temple itself rests inside the hollowed out room of a giant stone boulder, providing instant relief from the heat of the day and some unusual curvature to the ceiling. Murals decorate every inch of wall space. A large Buddha resides behind a large curtain, in the lying position. Japanese floor tiles donated in 1940 make beautiful colour mash floor patterns. Keep your eyes peeled for Vishnu.
A testament to the age of the bho tree outside is the numerous metal poles and boulders that support the weight of its ancient branches. Quite remarkable and a beautiful tree to be sure.
Well worth a visit. Consider donating a small amount to the keeper at the temple for restoration works.
